ITER - Making Nuclear Fusion a viable energy source

· Sai Skanda

ITER which is still under construction will have the world’s largest tokamak. This is a donut shaped hollow tube like structure that uses super cooled magnets to contain the fusion products. Since this is a super high temperature mixture, it cannot really be contained by a container as such, so magnets literally levitate the plasma mid air.

The ITER will need a lot of energy just to startup. It needs super cooled magnets that involves a lot of electricity and helium. Multiple MW probably. So for a successful test, it will need to produce more energy than what it takes to run/maintain the fusion reactions inside.

If successful fusion energy has the potential to be the best source of energy, it does not really use radioactive elements and therefore much safer. We would still be dealing with a lot of heat and energy but it definitely will not cause anything close to the havoc of a nuclear reactor meltdown.

This is a multi billion dollar project involving 30+ countries including India. India was responsible for one of the largest components of the main reactor, the external cryostat shield, cooling equipment and more.

Note- This is another quick short post I’m making to see if the automation is working and that I can update the site mobile and not necessarily need a PC

Second Note - It did not work, fixing from my laptop 😕 not sure whats wrong in the formatting of the markdown file I am creating using Zettel
